Everytime I try to connect to the server, the console shows me that the game is trying to download a bunch of file from a dropbox but it fails all the time
It means I have to wait 2 minutes every map change, after every download failed, to finally get to play

Is there any tutorial on how to play on this server properly, ie what to download (sounds, maps, skins, ...), what to do to download these things automatically (if I remember correctly I could enable/disable download of files when I connected to a server when I played cs 1.6... is there something similar for l4d2 ? because when I don't have the map, I simply cannot connect to the server at all)

Well normally you have to manually download the custom maps for yourself well I guess most people do it this way including myself.

Let's say this for instance :
You are playing on a default l4d2 map which isn't a custom and then someone votes a custom map and most of the players agree then the server will automatically write down the download link in the chat so that you can just copy /paste that link in your browser (i.e : Firefox, Chrome) to download the map. For me the game simply drops me if I try to connect to the server which has a map that I don't own.

I haven't experienced any vote yet since I play on my own all the time ever since the server changed
But yeah when I want to connect to an unofficial map my game simply stops

What I don't understand is why I have to wait 3min (I checked on the clock last time Razz

) for sounds and other things that apparently aren't even requiered to play on the hotel map
I don't mind to download them but where can I find them ?
I copied the urls in the console to see if the download works on my web browser but apparently the files were deleted from the dropbox

Well that is some strange behaviour from the game. Have you tried reinstalling the whole game ? Or just simply try to install the dx,vc, network frame that comes with the game and once you finish installing them just restart your PC, laptop and see if it works.

Also there is a slight chance that your audio driver is damaged because you wrote that the sounds don't appear instantly, try to update it to the latest version.
If these methods don't work then I don't know what will.

I installed the game just a few days before I came to this server so no I won't reinstall it cause it wouldn't change anything

What do you mean I said "sounds don't appear instantly" ? I never said that
I said that when I try to connect to the server, I have to wait 3 minutes before I can play because the server asks me to download files from a dropbox, which include quake sounds, some riot shield file, ... but it fails everytime because the url from which the game tries to download is no longer valid

Sry I misinterpreted your post. You wrote that you have to wait 3 minutes for sounds and others. I thought that once you connect and you're able to play ,you can't hear anything for 3 minutes. My bad there.

Contact albert. Maybe he has a solution to this.

Thanks for your problem report.
I'll have a look asap.
Normally the game will download some files from the dropbox.
Custom sounds and graphic overlays etc.
This worked properly now for about nearly 2 years.
Like I said I'll have a look when I'm back on my PC.

These files should be downloaded automatically as shown in the console.

I've tested it here and it still works fine.

So I don't know why you cannot access the dropbox.

Have you tried to copy one of the whole paths to your web browser? e.g.

When giving only part of the path you will see 404 error from dropbox e.g.

Maybe your windows account does not have the permissions to write to that game folders? (just an idea)

Like I wrote above other players could test the download again too.
Just delete or rename one of the files and they should be downloaded again when you connect to the GunGame server.

Not all of the files are downloaded.
Check your console to see which files are requested.
When the files are present in your game folders, they won't be downloaded again.

Last year dropbox has removed the PUBLIC download folder feature.
Today I've found that we still link to that kind of folder.
That is not good because e.g. gungame stuff could not be downloaded by the game anymore.

Now I have updated the download link in all l4d2 servers.
The new URL base part is:

I hope it will work now again that clients get the required custom stuff from the server automatically.

You could test if the automatic download works again:

1) download the zip file
2) have a look in the zip file, which files should be downloaded automatically
3) find one or more of these files in your local game client installation folder
4) delete or rename some of these files in your local game client installation
5) connect to e.g. the gungame server
6) you should see in the console how the missing files are downloaded again

If you can't find the files in your local game client installation then the download never worked for you or you connected to e.g. gungame server only after mid of last year, when dropbox killed the public folder feature.

Please tell me if you find any links or references to dropbox which are not working anymore.

I did get a question about this yesterday and I hadn't realized this was the issue.

This will enhance GGM for a lot of current players because they have never heard the Quake 3 Arena/Unreal Tournament sounds on the server before. At least one player has noticed it for the first time already. Laughing

I try test it. I use teamkiller.vmt and teamkiller.vtf, was delete files, and after connecting on server files was inside folder again (redownloaded).
More details: not work ofcorse, when in game menu/multiplayer/custom server content set to - NONE. i try that too. i teamkill bot (admin slap to BW first) and hear custom sound voice message from UT - ttteeamkilllerr.
Sometimes in game i advice players to set custom server content to none when i see some have issues with slow connection to servers, or have spike lags. I think if person have much mods in adon folder or workshop (and lot of conflicts) custom content may situation worse with that. Beside that - set memory pool to low help more speed in connection ( in normal im in server after 5-10 sec, depend on custom map, others join from couple to 5-6 ces after me, problematic person may late 3-4 minutes, once i see guy joining each time when we on 75 % of level.
